Synopsis
Following Emperor Marcus Aurelius' death in 180 AD, chaos ensues in the Roman Empire. General Maximus, a trusted adviser to the late emperor, is betrayed by Marcus' son Commodus who orders Maximus' execution. Maximus escapes but is captured and thrust into the brutal world of gladiatorial combat as "Spaniard."
